In many restaurants and cafés there aren’t any paper menus that we get used to. That’s why check with the waiter or order “the same as at that table”. Well, the establishment’s owner or water will come to help you and offer some dishes to choose from.
To buy fresh and cheap vegetables, fish and spices, head to the Qaboos market. And to buy souvenirs made from sandal wood, silver and gold, it’s better to go to the Muttrah market.
It is a unique experience to do shopping in Oman. The vast majority of stores are open from 8AM to 7PM but are closed for lunch from 1PM to 4:30 PM. And on Fridays many, if not most, stores are closed.
In most cases you will have to pay with cash. US dollars are sometimes accepted but they usually offer unfavorable exchange rates. It takes rather long to exchange currency in bank. The fastest way is to exchange currency in currency exchange offices. And keep in mind that not all Oman’s ATMs accept foreign cards.
